Awareness Of Environmental Development
We have been teaching slum children in Delhi and our education program targets children studying in classes I to X in municipal schools. Our teachers deliver individually-centered education to the pupils in regular school subjects and in Spoken English language. The program complements gaps in school education and sustains the interest of children and their parents in formal education system. By attending classes in our learning center we also give children the confidence to not drop-out from their regular schools.
Awareness Of Right To Education (RTE)
Right to Education (RTE) act of 2009 made India one of the very few countries in the world to make education a right of every child. Section 12(1)c of the act guarantees 25% reservation for children of backward and economically sections of the society free education in private schools.
An estimated 10 lakh such free seats are available each year, yet most of them are not taken as there is little awareness among under-privileged communities. Our focus is to engage volunteers in creating awareness among such communities and helping them benefit from this life transforming opportunity.
Awareness Of Water And Sanitation
India is the second most populous country in the world, with more than 1 billion citizens. A staggering 344 million practice open defecation.
The World Bank estimates that 21 percent of communicable diseases in India are linked to unsafe water and the lack of hygiene practices. Further, more than 500 children under the age of five die each day from diarrhea in India alone.
Handwashing with soap alone can prevent between 500,000 and 1.4 million deaths per year.
Access to proper sanitation facilities at home can reduce diarrheal diseases by 32%
The hygienic treatment, handling and stor-age of drinking water can also significantly help improve families’ health
Awareness Of Air & Noise Pollution
*Air pollution due to burning in the open: Municipal solid waste burning is a major cause of air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Although this is banned across the country, people are still unaware and use burning to dispose garbage easily. We monitor this with a network of keen volunteers who keep us updated from time to time. We then present this information to concerned departments to stop the fire to minimize air pollution.
*Crop burning Control: Since 2014-15 we have started work on air pollution. Crop/agriculture residue burning in neighboring states of Delhi is one of the major causes of air pollution which also affects soil. SAFE members have been working in the areas of Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan to create more awareness, minimize burning. In last we have move to National Green Tribunal (NGT). Thus, because of some effort a ban on crop burning in these four states was introduced in the year 2015 by NGT. Now farmers have got subsidies to manage the crop residue and awareness generated has reduced air pollution and increased crop production. In every state (Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan) one model district is being worked upon which will become a crop burning free district. District level committee has been created in all the districts of these four states which will control crop burning. Given the severity of this issue, the central government has made provision of subsidy on machinery for it also in the budget (2018). However, more support needs to be provided to farmers for crop residue management.
*Recycling of Old & Used Tyres: Old & used tyres are being disposed in large quantities in India as scrap. This scrap is mostly burnt polluting the air as well as soil. Therefore, there is a need to make a policy about this by the central government and manufacturers to ensure reuse of the old tyres, recycle for new tyres manufacturing.
*Noise pollution: is a major problem in India and it has a serious impact on health. There are many reasons for noise pollution and mostly, vehicular pollution. People are not very aware of this. We are therefore working on awareness about this. We are constantly appealing to the concerned authorities to implement the law to curb noise pollution.
